In today’s landscape, organisations are looking for alternative solutions to traditional in-person training so they can continue to upskill their people, so naturally, virtual training is gaining in popularity.

But what is the real difference between virtual and in-person training – and which one is right for your organisation?

In today’s podcast, I’m going to share some information that you might not be aware of around these two very different training methods.

So, virtual versus in-person training? Though there is nothing like the experience of being in a room with fellow participants, sometimes it is no longer the most practical or cost-effective option, when there are other training platforms that can deliver the outcomes your organisation wants.

Let’s start by looking at the practicalities.

 

Virtual training can be as practical as classroom training

When it comes to developing our future leaders, historically, classroom-based training was the preferred option because it allows for break out groups and peer practice and feedback.

However, today’s technology can provide a great alternative that can deliver the same outcomes.

Let me share an example from our training events here at Excel. Recently we ran several taster workshops on the subject of managing virtual teams. Using Zoom as a platform, our trainer was able to present concepts to the group who could then ask questions, and then groups of four could move off into break out rooms; then come back and contribute to the group.

Now we’re living in a post-coronavirus world; organisations are reviewing the practicalities of delivering in-person training for more parts of their L and D curriculum.

We are going to see a lot more virtual everything from now on – including virtual training for many organisations across the globe.

 

The second difference I want to share is about investment and leverage

Virtual training is more cost-effective than in-person training, and why is this? Well, it ties into my first point about the practicalities.

Virtual training can be delivered at a lower cost than in-person training, and I know that’s an extremely relevant point right now as organisations look for ways to continue to train and develop their employees to a high standard and within budget constraints.

Now let me share some data – the average company saves between 30-70% on their training costs when switching to virtual-based learning, and in real terms that amounts to around £8,000 – £13,000 per company.

 

And finally, the last thing I want to talk about is the effectiveness of virtual compared to in-person training

Not only is virtual easier to implement and is more cost-effective, but it can also be as effective as classroom-based training, depending on the topic.

We know that many individuals find e-learning more engaging depending on what they are learning.

One study from the eLearning industry website found that 56% of learners were more satisfied with virtual and online training than in-person training.

Employees can learn when it suits them – they have the power to stop and start modules, to go over certain parts and take the whole programme at their own preferred pace; and this is the key to effective training – finding a way to help each individual connect with their learning.

So, there we have three differences in online training compared to in-person. At Excel, we’re big advocates of virtual training.
